Peter Tomsett

Peter Tomsett

Independent Chairman

Mr Tomsett was appointed as Chairman of the Board in November 2021, after being appointed as a Non-Executive Director of the Board in September 2018. Mr Tomsett is also the Chairman of the Nominations Committee.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE
Mr Tomsett has extensive and deep gold mining and international business experience as both an executive and non-executive director of a broad range of mining companies listed on the Australian, Toronto, New York and London stock exchanges. His last executive role was as the President and Chief Executive Officer of global gold and copper company, Placer Dome Inc, where he worked for 20 years in project, operational and executive roles.

He has been the Chairman and Managing Director of Kidston Gold Mines Ltd and the Non-Executive Chairman of Equinox Minerals Ltd and Silver Standard Resources Inc. He has also held numerous other Board positions in mining, energy and construction companies and associations including as a Director of OZ Minerals Ltd, Acacia Mining plc, Talisman Energy Inc, North American Energy Partners Inc, Africo Resources Ltd, World Gold Council, Minerals Council of Australia, and International Council for Mining and Metals.

Managing Director and CEO - Sandeep Biswas

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer

Mr Biswas was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer on 4 July 2014. He joined Newcrest in January 2014, as Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE
Mr Biswas was previously Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Aluminium, a wholly owned subsidiary within the Rio Tinto group, which incorporated the bauxite, alumina, refining and smelting operations in Australia and New Zealand.

He began his career with Mount Isa Mines, working in both Australia and Europe. Mr Biswas has also worked for Western Mining in Australia and Rio Tinto in Canada and Australia.  He has experience in research, operations, business development and projects, across commodities including aluminium, copper, lead, zinc and nickel.

Philip Aiken

Mr Aiken was appointed to the Board in April 2013. He is Chairman of the Human Resources and Remuneration Committee and a member of the Safety and Sustainability Committee and the Nominations Committee.

Mr Aiken has extensive Australian and international business experience, principally in the engineering and resources sectors.  He was Group President Energy BHP Billiton, President BHP Petroleum, Managing Director BOC/CIG, Chief Executive of BTR Nylex and Senior Advisor Macquarie Bank (Europe).

Vickki McFadden

Ms McFadden was appointed to the Board in October 2016. She is Chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee, a member of the Human Resources and Remuneration Committee and a member of the Nominations Committee.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE
Ms McFadden is an experienced company director and has broad experience in several roles as member or chairman of audit and risk committees. Ms McFadden has an extensive background in finance and law.

She is a former investment banker with considerable expertise in corporate finance transactions, having served as Managing Director of Investment Banking at Merrill Lynch in Australia and as a Director of Centaurus Corporate Finance and a former President of the Australian Takeovers Panel.

Roger Higgins

Dr Higgins was appointed to the Board in October 2015.  He is Chairman of the Safety and Sustainability Committee and a member of the Human Resources and Remuneration Committee.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE
Dr Higgins brings extensive experience leading mining companies and operations and has deep working knowledge of Papua New Guinea as a current Non-Executive Director and a former Managing Director of Ok Tedi Mining Limited in Papua New Guinea.  In his most recent executive position, Dr Higgins served as Senior Vice President, Copper at Canadian metals and mining company, Teck Resources Limited.

Prior to this role he was Vice President and Chief Operating Officer with BHP Billiton Base Metals Customer Sector Group working in Australia and also held senior positions with BHP Billiton in Chile.  He holds the position of Adjunct Professor with the Sustainable Minerals Institute, University of Queensland.

Ms Layman has over 26 years of international experience in resources and corporate finance. She spent 14 years with Macquarie Group in a range of senior positions, including as Division Director and Joint Head of the Perth office of the Metals, Mining & Agriculture Division. Prior to that, Ms Layman held various positions with resource companies including Mount Isa Mines, Great Central Mines and Normandy Yandal.

Ms McAloon has extensive experience in the resources, energy, infrastructure and utilities industries.  She spent 9 years as Group Company Secretary at BHP, including 2 years on the Group Management Committee as President Governance. Prior to that, Ms McAloon was Group Manager, Corporate & External Services & Company Secretary at AGL, had leadership roles with the NSW Government and worked in private legal practice.

Mr Bainbridge has extensive senior executive experience, primarily in the oil and gas sector across exploration, development and production. He has worked in a variety of jurisdictions, including Papua New Guinea. His most recent executive role was as Executive General Manager LNG for Oil Search Limited. Prior to that, he had senior executive roles at Pacific National and BP Group.

Chief Financial Officer - Sherry Duhe

Sherry is responsible for overseeing Newcrest’s financial activities, with remit covering the Accounting, Group Procurement, Marketing, Shared Services, Financial Planning and Analysis, Group Communications, Investor Relations, Tax and Treasury functions.

Commencing with Newcrest in February 2022, Sherry has 27 years’ experience across the finance and commercial sectors.  Prior to Newcrest, Sherry was Chief Financial Officer at Woodside for four years, and held a number of global finance leadership roles in Shell for the 13 years prior. She has extensive international experience having lived and worked in a number of countries around the world before moving to Australia in 2017, particularly in North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East.

Craig Jones - Chief Operating Officer (Americas)

Craig is responsible for the Red Chris and Brucejack operations.  He is based in Vancouver. 

Since joining Newcrest, Craig has held various executive and senior management roles, with responsibility during that time for operations in Papua New Guinea, Australia and Indonesia.

Prior to joining Newcrest, Craig worked in projects at Rio Tinto.

Phil Stephenson - Chief Operating Officer (Australasia)

Phil is responsible for the Cadia, Telfer and Lihir operations. In addition to leading operations during this time in both Australia and the Americas, he has also been responsible for sites in both Indonesia and Côte d’Ivoire in his seven years at Newcrest, when he first joined as General Manager Health, Safety, Environment and Security. 
 
Before his time at Newcrest, Phil’s experience includes a variety of roles at some of the world’s largest mining companies, including Newmont Mining Corporation, Barrick Gold Corporation and Place Dome Inc, with experience across North America, Papua New Guinea and Australia. 

Seil Song - Chief Development Officer

Chief Development Officer

As the Chief Development Officer, Seil is responsible for the company’s growth and development activities, including Newcrest’s global exploration programme, business development and a growing portfolio of strategic partnerships, farm-in arrangements and investments across Australia, Asia Pacific and the Americas.

Seil joined Newcrest in 2017 as General Manager – Business Development and contributed to the company’s growth strategy, notably through his leadership of the Red Chris transaction and investment in Lundin Gold. Prior to Newcrest, Seil was in London working in mining private equity and investment banking, leading several notable transactions within the mining industry. Seil started his career as a mining engineer before moving into corporate strategy and business development with Rio Tinto.

Suresh joined Newcrest in May 2020 as the Chief Technical & Projects Officer accountable for core value generating disciplines including Resource Management, Mining, Metallurgy, Asset Management, Automation, Directional Studies & Technology, Information Technology, Project Delivery (including Wafi-Golpu), Business Improvement and Technical Risk. 

Prior to joining Newcrest, Suresh served on the Executive Committee at MMG Limited in his capacity as the Executive General Manager Operations (Australia & Africa and Americas) where he was accountable for the operation and growth of a variety of assets in these regions, including for the Las Bambas operation. Suresh has extensive international operational and projects experience having worked and lived in Australia, Africa, Asia and South America.

Ria has had an extensive career in mining, manufacturing, construction, private healthcare and banking.

She is a seasoned executive who has advised public boards, CEOs and executive committees on governance, risk, sustainability, compliance, mergers and acquisitions, litigation, regulatory and commercial legal matters.

She has had experience leading multi-jurisdictional teams and has regulatory expertise across Africa, the United States, Australia and the UK. Prior to joining Newcrest Ria was the Executive Vice President – General Counsel, Compliance and Company Secretary at AngloGold Ashanti.

Acting Chief Sustainability Officer - Bob Thiele

Bob leads Newcrest’s Sustainability & Social Performance, Environment, Cultural Heritage, Government & Industry Relations, Health, Safety & Security, (including Respect @ Work) and Net Zero Emissions functions.

He has held a range of senior leadership roles during the past 25 years at Newcrest, Calibre Global, Barrick Gold and Placer Dome. These include roles in operations, technical services, business improvement and sustainability.

Acting Chief People and Culture Officer - Paul Stratford

Paul Stratford

Paul oversees Newcrest’s People & Employee Relations, Talent & Capability, and Performance & Reward teams.

He has had a seasoned career across the human resources sector for the past 20 years, leading talent functions across different sectors and ASX-listed companies. This includes more than a decade as a senior leader at Telstra and more recently leading the talent and development function at Orora.
